Volunteer Curatorial Intern (x2), Orleans House Gallery

Orleans House Gallery is a Local Authority accredited museum in the London Borough of Richmond-upon-Thames. It is home to the Borough Art Collection, which contains historically important works relating to the local area and the collection of the Victorian explorer Sir Richard Burton. Orleans House has recently begun a long-term project to digitise all works in the Borough Art Collection and curates a regular rolling programme of exhibitions at three sites in the borough, ranging from solo shows by contemporary artists, to themed exhibitions and collaborative community displays.

Orleans House Gallery is offering two three-month Volunteer Curatorial Internships for candidates interested in developing their knowledge of curatorial practices. The role will provide valuable work experience and understanding of how curatorial projects are run in a busy medium-sized museum. The Volunteer Curatorial Intern will support the Curator in the administration, research, care, handling and installation of collection items, as well as undertaking digitisation and collections management tasks. The placement will enable the candidate to gain experience of loans, submissions, cataloguing and collection databases, as well as insight into exhibition programming.

Applicants will need to demonstrate an interest in and knowledge of art (historical or contemporary); enthusiasm for learning about curatorial practice and collections management; computer literacy; good organisational skills; strong written communication skills; attentiveness to detail, ability to use own initiative and work independently as well as part of a team; and ability to work with the public.

The internships will ideally involve volunteering for 3 months at 3 days per week. One internship will run from 23rd August – 19th November 2010; the second from 27th September – 23rd December 2010.

As a voluntary internship this position is unpaid, but you will receive travel expenses of up to £10 for every day you come into the office. Each candidate will in addition receive a maintenance bursary of £200.

Application is by Application Pack: please contact Catherine.Spencer@Richmond.gov.uk (0208 831 6485) to receive an Application Pack including the full Volunteer Curatorial Intern role description, application form and diversity monitoring form.

The deadline for applications to both internships is Monday 9th August 2010 at 5.30pm. Interviews will be held on Monday 16th August.

The Volunteer Curatorial Internships are being offered in association with the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council’s Renaissance London Internship Best Practice Standard and Guidelines initiative.

Orleans House Gallery is committed to the promotion of Equality and Diversity.
